Axel Springer SE is extending its range of journalistic offerings and is acquiring a majority stake in the digital media company Vertical Media which, amongst other things, operates the gruenderszene.de portal. To this end, Axel Springer is acquiring nearly 90 percent of the shares in Vertical Media GmbH. Co-founder Mark Hoffmann holds the remaining shares. He will stay on board as Managing Director.
"In Vertical Media we are investing in a young media company that is specialized in the digital economy and associated news for and about founders. Gruenderszene.de covers topics for a very interesting target group and adds an exciting facet to the economic competence of our publishing house", explains Stephanie Caspar, Managing Director WELT Group, to whose division Vertical Media will be attached organizationally.
Mark Hoffmann, co-founder and Managing Director of Vertical Media GmbH, adds: "No other German publishing house has understood the digital transformation as well and at the same time implemented it as radically as Axel Springer. This is why we at Vertical Media are all the more delighted to further develop our business with this joint mindset. The broadening of our national presence will play a key role in this development."
Gruenderszene.de started 2005 as a personal blog of internet entrepreneur Lukasz Gadowski. In 2008, Vertical Media GmbH was founded by the investment company Team Europe. In 2011 venturevillage.eu was launched, an English language offering. In 2012 the company received a growth funding from business angels and PDV Inter-Media Venture GmbH. The startup events Heureka! and Spätschicht as well as the CEO Dinners also belong to Vertical Media. 30 employees and freelancers work for the Berlin-based Group.
