FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE and Axel Springer:
Cartel Office approves sale of regional newspapers and women’s magazines

Today, 3nd December 2013, the Federal Cartel Office has approved the acquisition of Axel Springer’s regional newspapers and women’s magazines by FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE. For the regional newspapers this includes BERLINER MORGENPOST, HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT, BERGEDORFER ZEITUNG as well as the advertising papers in Berlin and Hamburg. The women’s magazines are BILD der FRAU and FRAU von HEUTE.

On July 25th, 2013, FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE agreed to take over Axel Springer’s regional newspapers as well as its TV program guides and women’s magazines subject to the approval of the antitrust authorities. The agreement also includes the establishing of marketing and distribution joint ventures.

With the aim of simplifying the approval procedure and allowing for progressive, separate approvals, the original application for overall transaction approval was withdrawn for formal reasons on November 18th, 2013. The antitrust approval process was thereafter newly divided into four single packages. First: regional newspapers and women’s magazines, Second: TV program guides, Third: distribution joint venture, Fourth: marketing joint venture.

The overall volume of the planned transaction remains unchanged. The remaining decisions may be expected next year.
